Diagnosis of the Human C ondition   A slave longs only for f r eedom and not for his Maste r ’ s fortune, but a son is not only a child of the Maste r , he is an heir with claim to his fathe r ’ s wealth. Likewise child r en of death a r e not only dead, death is their only inheritance. Heirs of life, on the other hand, a r e themselves alive, and they can inherit both life and death. The dead, howeve r , inherit nothing, for how can a dead person become an heir?
